Melody’s Echo Chamber – The House That Doesn’t Exist
French psych-pop artist Melody Prochet releases “The House That Doesn’t Exist” ahead of Friday’s Unclouded album. The track showcases the creative chemistry between Melody and producer Sven Wunder, with swooping strings and electrifying verses answered by lush ensemble arrangements. It climbs vertiginously before settling into a warm, grounded low register—funky drums and dizzy cinematic strings creating groovy, glamorous music that sounds like it belongs in an old European art film.
Prochet says the song “turns the impossible perspective of a joyful human life in today’s world into reality, evoking a new sense of faith.” Unclouded marks a shift in her work, moving from escapism toward embracing life directly. She describes gathering the scattered pieces of herself and gluing them together with gold, referencing the Japanese art of kintsugi, where broken pottery is repaired with precious metals.
Sven Wunder co-produced Unclouded and contributed to the writing, bringing his sonic palette to work that already featured Josefin Runsteen on strings, Daniel Ögren from Dina Ögon on guitar, Love Örsan on bass, British drummer Malcolm Catto of The Heliocentrics, and Dungen’s Reine Fiske laying down Johnny Marr-esque guitar parts throughout. Leon Michels, who’s worked with Wu-Tang, The Carters, Norah Jones, and Clairo, contributed to album closer “Daisy” alongside El Michels Affair. Grammy winner Jens Jungkurth mixed that track.
The album radiates the energy from Melody’s 2022 comeback tour, written in the Alps of High Provence after returning home. She’s gotten faster at bouncing back from downs, finding more harmonious feelings quicker than before. Previous singles “In The Stars”, “Eyes Closed”, and the El Michels Affair collaboration “Daisy” showed the album’s drifting psych-pop ambience and bright, delicate airiness. Unclouded drops December 5 via Domino, with a Q&A and signing at London’s Rough Trade East on December 10.
